Royal couple show support for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal

Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton have chosen the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal as one of a select group of charities in their Royal Wedding charitable gift fund.

The couple have asked that anyone who might kindly wish to give them a wedding gift consider giving instead to a charitable fund. Prince William and Miss Middleton have personally chosen 26 charities based in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Mark Weldon, the Prime Minister’s personal representative on the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, said he was grateful to the couple for extending their support in this way.

“We know people all around the world have been moved by events in Christchurch and have asked how they can help the community get back on its feet.

“We have an enormous task ahead of us and we’re touched that of all the charities around the world they could have chosen, the couple have extended their support to the people of Christchurch. I know many New Zealanders would join the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal in thanking Prince William and Miss Middleton for their support.

“I would also like to acknowledge Prince William’s commitment to Christchurch by his travelling to New Zealand for the Memorial Service tomorrow,” said Mr Weldon.

Donations can be made through www.royalweddingcharityfund.org or directly to the appeal at www.quakeappeal.com.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal will channel money into the heart of Christchurch communities, such as rugby clubs, community halls, school equipment, churches, arts centres and marae.

The fund will focus on seven core areas: Hardship and Relief, Heritage and Culture, Sport and Recreation, Education, Spiritual and Faith, Economic Revitalisation, Environment.
